Training your cat to fetch a ball or a toy takes time — and a lot of patience. Teaching your cat to fetch is a CatSchool advanced skill.
Cat Fetch Training Steps (Inspired by Julie Poslun’s CatSchool)
- Get a treat ball – you can put treats in crevices on the ball’s surface
- Place a treat in one of the crevices and show your cat the ball
- Click (or say yes) when your cat bites the ball and releases it into your open hand
- Reward your cat with a treat
- Repeat the cycle a few times
- Phase out the treat in the crevice – present the ball without the treat
- Reward your cat with a treat when she bites the ball
- Repeat many times
- Place the ball on a surface like a table
- Click and reward when your cat picks up the ball from the table
And guess what? Sunday is doing great! Every day we practice with her little ball. It has a tiny bell inside. Today she picked up her ball. The bell rang. She dropped it right back down, just like she was supposed to. 🎉
I am practicing asking Sunday to pick the up ball from the table and drop it into my hand.
I am so proud of her. We are not done yet, but we are getting closer every day.
