Cat Name Response Is a Real Skill
Cat name response means your cat has learned that her name is a cue worth paying attention to. When she hears it, she orients toward you. And with enough reinforcement, she comes to you. Reliably. Even when there are better things to do.
Even While Distracted
In Name Response 3 — Distractions, you can see what name response looks like when it’s actually being built, step by step. This is Grade 3 of Sunday’s CatSchool curriculum — the distraction phase, where we practice the skill when Sunday has competing things pulling her attention.
Sunday is curious about the front door. I say her name. She comes right to me.
That’s not luck. That’s training.
There’s a moment in cat training that feels a little like magic. You say your cat’s name, and she actually comes straight to you. Because she wants to. It’s a wonderful feeling.
What happens after she comes to me? That’s what you’ll see in Sunday’s latest Short — I Love Making Biscuits ❤️.
I called her name. She came right to my lap. And then she had work to do.
Why This Matters (Beyond the Cuteness)
A solid name response is one of the most practical skills you can teach a cat. It’s the foundation for recall — being able to bring your cat to you in any situation, including ones that matter for safety. It also deepens the bond between you, because your cat learns that responding to you pays off.
The biscuit-making at the end? That’s Sunday’s bonus. Completely unscripted. Completely her.
