One afternoon, I saw something I had never seen before. A woman walking her cat in a backpack in my neighborhood. Not in a stroller. A cat in a backpack. Calm. Beautiful. Curious. Could we possibly become cat backpack buddies?
We live in a senior community, where you don’t often see cats strolling down the sidewalk in backpacks.
I stopped and called out, “Hey! Beautiful cat!”
We smiled at each other the way cat people do when we realize we’ve found one of our own. I showed her a photo of Sunday in her backpack.
There was a pause, and then a question: Should we try this together?
We did.
In a few days we met with our cats in their backpacks. We walked and talked. The sidewalk suddenly felt less ordinary.

I Love My Cat Backpack Buddies!
On our most recent walk, we stayed out for over an hour. I was so proud of Sunday. She was happy the entire time.
Since then, we’ve started walking our cats together – hers a ragdoll and mine a calico.
It’s different from walking a dog. It feels intentional. Connected.
Cat clicker training opened this door.
Before training, I would never have imagined Sunday calmly exploring the neighborhood. I wouldn’t have imagined Sunday stepping confidently into her backpack and being happy inside.
Training didn’t just teach a behavior. It built trust. And because of that trust, something else happened.
Friendship.
What started as one woman walking her cat alone became two women walking their cats together. Now we are cat backpack buddies.
Sunday is an ordinary cat on an extraordinary journey.
